RESUME WRITING TIPS

What Kind of Job Do You Want?

The most important thing is to determine the kind of job that you want.

  • Determine the job title you want.
  • Determine the intangibles that you hope to get in your new job (such as a leadership role)

A Marketing Tool

Your resume should be a resume tool not a career obituary. Every word should be a selling point.

  • Use powerful words such as action words (planned, created, initiated, developed, implemented), and leadership words (organized, directed, led, supervised, was responsible for, coordinated,)
  • Use words that match or complement the job description for the job you want to land.

Results

Concentrate on the results of your work at previous jobs. Include result words in your resume when describing previous positions. Examples are: led to, resulted in, contributed, demonstrated, achieved. Also don't list all of your job duties from previous positions; list only those things that will help you get your next job or things that you'd like to do again in the future.

What Not to Do

There are a few things that are definitive no-no's on a resume.

  • Don't use "I" or "me"
  • Don't have typos. Remember to proofread your resume.
  • Don't over-use jargon words --- especially if those jargon words are proprietary to your previous workplace.
